IN a significant development in India’s aviation sector on Monday, November 11, Vistara airlines bid adieu before stopping operations ahead of its merger with India’s premier flyer, Air India.

In a message on X, the airline said, “As the plane ascends, so do our dreams; let’s glide toward the future, where the sky isn’t the limit, but just the beginning.”

It also added a tag “To Limited Possibilities” to indicate their new future as Air India.

The carrier revealed that starting September 2024, customers would slowly lose opportunities to make bookings with Vistara for travel dates from November 12 onwards.

Vistara Airlines is joint venture between the Tata Group and Singapore airlines.

The merger, announced two years ago, will see Singapore Airlines holding a 21.5 per cent stake in the newly combined flyer after the deal is closed.

‘Humbled and honoured,’ says CEO

Vistara CEO Vinod Kannan posted a message on LinkedIn in which he said, “Thank you #team Vistara – TATA SIA Airlines Ltd. Past and present.

Thank you to our ~75million passengers for your support, patronage and touching testimonials.

Humbled and honoured to have been part of this team.

Onwards and upwards towards our new chapter. The new feeling has a new home…”

He also said the merger will give passengers more options by expanding the fleet and network while improving the overall travel experience.

Air India CEO’s take

Air India CEO and MD Campbell Wilson has assured that Vistara’s ‘world-class fleet, exceptional service, and familiar face’ will be in operation post merger. Air India has promised to maintain the essence of Vistara’s premium experience, addressing the passengers’ concerns over the quality of service following the merger.

Wilson also said that cross-functional teams from Air India and Vistara have been working in tandem for many months to make the transition of aircraft, flying crew, ground-based colleagues and customers into the new Air India as seamlessly as possible.

Passengers who have availed Vistara flights over the years also came up with emotional messages sharing their memories with the carrier and hoped that arrangements would be as good post merger.
