INDIAN Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday, November 18, was impressed by a rousing welcome from the Indian diaspora after reaching Rio de Janeiro in Brazil for the 19th G20 Leaders’ Summit.
In a post on X, he wrote in English and Spanish, “Deeply touched by the warm and lively welcome from the Indian community upon arriving in Rio de Janeiro. Their energy reflects the affection that binds us across continents.”

Modi, who has visited the Latin American country for the third time in his decade-long stay in office, was greeted at the hotel where he checked in with a dandiya performance presented by dancers dressed in traditional Gujarati attire. Vedic scholars chanted mantras to welcome him as well. Modi interacted with members of the diaspora who presented him with gifts.
As is seen in other parts of the world, diaspora members turned up in large numbers, waving the Indian Tricolor and carrying pictures of the Indian PM. They said it was a proud moment for them to see the leader of the world’s largest democracy in person.
Modi, who shared pictures of his visit, also said on X, “Landed in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil to take part in the G20 Summit. I look forward to the Summit deliberations and fruitful talks with various world leaders.”

Last year, India passed on the baton of the G20 presidency to Brazil at the leaders’ summit held in New Delhi. Several world leaders, including US President Joe Biden, were present on the occasion. Biden and his Chinese counterpart X Jinping, who skipped the 2023 event in India, will be present for the Rio summit.
‘Brazil built upon India’s legacy’
Speaking about the G20 summit which kicked off on Monday, November 18, Modi said Brazil built upon India’s legacy and he was looking forward to meaningful talks in keeping with the vision of ‘One Earth, One Family, One Future’, the theme of India’s G20 presidency in 2023.
Modi is currently on a three-nation tour, which includes Nigeria and Guyana, besides Brazil. He first reached Nigeria where he held talks with its top leadership over deepening bilateral ties and extending humanitarian aid. He was also honored with the West African nation’s second highest honour, the ‘Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger’.
