A MAN has been arrested for giving Indian actor Shah Rukh Khan a death threat, police sources said.
The accused, Mohammad Faizan Khan, was arrested from his house in Raipur in the central Indian state of Chhattisgarh for making a threat call to the veteran actor and demanding INR 50 lakh ($59,256).
He is a lawyer by profession, it was learnt. It was reported that he was being interrogated by the police.
The accused was arrested after he skipped an appearance before the Mumbai Police.
Earlier, Faizan had said his mobile phone, from which the call was made, was stolen. He also said that he filed a police case on November 2, the day Shah Rukh Khan turned 59.
A case was registered against the accused by the police under sections 308(4) (extortion involving threats of death or serious injury) and 351(3)(4) (criminal intimidation) of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
Shah Rukh Khan got death threat in October 2023
Shah Rukh Khan received a death threat in October last year, following the success of his two releases – Pathan and Jawan.
The police then increased the actor’s protection, giving him a Y plus security blanket.
It was found that Faizan had also raised concerns with Mumbai Police about one of Shah Rukh Khan’s dialogue in his 1994 film Anjaam that referred to hunting of deer, said another report.
According to him, he hails from the western state of Rajasthan and the local Bishnoi community is his friend. He said people from the community are concerned about the safety of deer and if a Muslim uttered anything like that about the deer, it was condemnable.
Issuing life threats to celebrities is not new in India. Another Khan of Bollywood, Salman, has also received a series of life threats, allegedly from a gang. In May, the police successfully foiled an alleged plan to gun down Salman Khan near his farmhouse in Panvel in the western state of Maharashtra. In case of Salman, too, the Bishnoi community of Rajasthan was reportedly upset with the actor for allegedly gunning down two blackbucks during the shooting of a film in 1998. The blackbucks are venerated by the Bishnoi community as sacred.
